Man United transfer controversy erupts after ‘stepping stone’ comment angers new club’s fans

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Radek Vitek, who joined Middlesbrough this window in a permanent transfer, was forced to take to X to clarify a controversial “stepping stone” comment.

Vitek has signed for Boro, with Manchester United having made an undisclosed fee from the sale of the Czech shot-stopper. His contract length has also not yet been revealed.

Boro have now signed seven players in the summer transfer window, as the club prepares for the 2026-27 EFL Championship season.

Vitek’s new side began competitive proceedings in the Carabao Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 victory against fellow Championship side Wrexham on Friday.

The 22-year-old goalkeeper was out on loan with Bristol City last season, and ended his campaign with the club’s Player of the Year trophy. Vitek has been a Manchester United player since joining from Sigma Olomouc in 2020, and won the FA Youth Cup during his spell with the Red Devils.

Now, after securing a permanent move away from Manchester, the Czech international has been forced to take to social media to clarify a comment that was construed as him referring to Middlesborough as a “stepping stone” in his career.

“New challenge for me; new stepping stone in my career; permanent move. I’m really excited. I hope everyone is as excited as me,” announced Vitek in a signing video posted to Boro’s X page.

That video was posted earlier this morning, and the ex-Manchester United goalkeeper quote-tweeted the Boro video with a message to supporters.

“I wanted to clarify what I meant by ‘stepping stone’. I just want to assure everyone that I have not meant that in any negative way,” wrote Vitek. The point of this comment was that this is [a] very important step in my career going forward. I can’t wait to get started,” he concluded.

Vitek, who stated that his mission is clear: to help take Boro to the Premier League, was immediately flooded with support from fans at his new club.

“No need to apologise, big fella!” wrote one such supporter, and “UTB, don’t worry. Most people knew what you meant,” said another.

The 22-year-old played 41 games for Bristol City in the Championship last season, keeping 12 clean sheets as his club secured 12th place.

Vitek made 3.3 saves per game in the 2025-26 season at a 71% success rate, ranking him as the joint best shot-stopper in the league alongside Derby County’s Jacob Widell Zetterstrom.

The six preceding signings of the summer made by Boro are Jeremy Sarmiento, Myles Peart-Harris, Kyle Joseph, Will Lankshear, Sebastian Berhalter and Max Arfsten.

Lankshear kicked his Middlesborough career off in style, scoring in his first competitive match for the club, and second overall, against Wrexham on Friday.

Vitek is expected to make his debut against Lincoln City next Saturday, as Boro look to improve on their fifth-placed finish last year, and play-off final loss to Hull City, in the club's pursuit of Premier League football.
