A bizarre incident happened during a Championship fixture on Friday evening – and people still can’t work out why.

Watford travelled to Plymouth, managed by Wayne Rooney, and they played out an entertaining 2-2, with Andre Gray’s 96th-minute strike earning a point for the south coast outfit.

But it was one of Watford’s goals that was the real talking point from the game.

The Hornets went ahead on the eight-minute mark when Yasser Larouci’s pinpoint cross found striker Vakoun Issouf Bayo, but strangely, you could hear a pin drop in the stadium despite the Hertfordshire-based side taking the lead.

Watford fans seated in the Barn Park End of Home Park took around five or six seconds to react to their team scoring, and even the commentator Gary Weaver seemed stunned by their delayed reaction.

“A delayed reaction from the Watford fans away to our left,” he said in the aftermath of the goal.

"That was one of the strangest reactions to a goal I've ever seen from an away section,” added co-commentator Don Goodman.

Fans on social media were quick to give their thoughts on the strange incident.

One fan joked: “Have we scored?", "I dunno, have we?", "I think we have", "YEEEEEAAAAAHHHHHH"

Another said: “Fans were buffering.”

A third added: “Haha, sounds like it was at West Ham. Takes that long for the sound to reach the pitch.”

With a fourth saying: “The confusion in the away section was priceless! They were so lost—what a moment!”

As a fifth exclaimed: “SIX SECONDS between goal and noise!!”

The Hornets will return to action on Tuesday evening when they play host Bristol City at Vicarage Road, while Rooney’s Plymouth side will travel to Carrow Road for a tough test against Norwich City.

The former Man United man gave his thoughts on his side’s spirited following the result.

"I was confident we could get a late goal, because we've done it a few times now, and there is that belief, especially when the fans get behind you,” Rooney said.

"It was a fantastic goal from Andre [Gray],” he added.

"It's really difficult to score like that, a ball over the shoulder, I know how difficult that is to take, and it's a world-class finish.

"Andre's second goal was a fantastic finish."

The goals Rooney is referring to were the two strikes from former Premier League forward Gray; he scored a stunning volley before adding a spectacular curled effort to his tally.
