Viktor Gyokeres' expected move to join Arsenal may fall through as a surprise club is believed to be in the final stages of a deal for the striker.

Throughout the summer transfer window, it has become clear that Arsenal are hoping to sign a star striker to Mikel Arteta's squad ahead of next season.

Several big names have been lined with the Gunners including the likes of Alexander Isak, Benjamin Sesko and, most notably, Sporting star Gyokeres.

Recent reports have suggested that Gyokeres is just days away from completing a move to the Emirates, for a reported initial fee of around £55m (€63.5M).

But now, a new report has claimed the the deal could be about to fall through, as another Premier League side has emerged out of nowhere to hijack the move.

According to Portuguese outlet SIC Noticias, Ruben Amorim's Manchester United have come out of nowhere and are very close to an agreement with Sporting for Gyokeres.

The report claims that with values of the deal are very close to those negotiated with Arsenal, meaning the Red Devils will likely pay around £55m for the Sweden international.

This means that, like their Premier League rivals, United will have to give €4.35m (£3.76m) of the transfer fee to give to Gyokeres' former club, Coventry City, after they included a 10% sell-on clause when selling him back in 2023.

Gyokeres' move to Arsenal has been stalling in recent days as Sporting continues to negotiate over several factors, including the clauses that could bring the total fee of the deal closer to £65m.

Sporting reportedly want to include four clauses, each rewarding €2.5million (£2.16m), totalling €10m (£8.5m).

Although Arsenal are happy to accept this, the two clubs reportedly disagree on what these clauses will be, with Arsenal demanding at least one of them should be a more challenging task.

Meanwhile United have remained busy in the transfer window, having signed Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha earlier in the window, before finally closing a deal for Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo earlier this week.

According to The Athletic, United have agreed a deal worth up to £71million for the Cameroon international, who scored 20 Premier League goals in 38 appearances last season.
