Footage shows cancelling pre-season clash between Spurs and Leicester was the right call

Footage shows cancelling pre-season clash between Spurs and Leicester was the right call

The two sides were scheduled to meet at the Rajamangala stadium in Bangkok, but that meeting is now cancelled for good.

Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City were both scheduled to meet at the Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok for a friendly, which has since been cancelled.

Both teams are embarking on new chapters with new managers at the helm, Ange Postecoglou with Spurs and Enzo Maresca with Leicester City.

Spurs lost their first game of pre-season, a five-goal thriller against fellow Premier League side and rivals West Ham United, marking Postecoglou's first match as Spurs boss with a loss.

Meanwhile Maresca got off to a slightly better start as Foxes manager, beating Northampton Town 1-0 in a pre-season friendly.

Though both sides were set to meet in Bangkok, the weather had different plans for them.

Heavy rainfall before kick-off in Bangkok caused a great deal of trouble to the open air Rajamangala stadium. As a result, there was an initial delay of 40 minutes to kick-off as the groundsmen and Postecoglou himself inspected the pitch many times.

Ultimately, the rain was simply too much to deal with for the ground and it was decided that the match would be cancelled. A video showing the conditions of the pitch has gone viral on social media and it shows that cancelling the game was definitely the right thing to do in this circumstance.

The video shows several puddles spread across the pitch, worsening conditions to play to the point where the ball refused to move along the grass. That's when it became clear that the match simply could not go on.

Players from both sides made sure to show their appreciation to the travelling fans though. Spurs and Leicester players both did a lap of honour to give their thanks to the fans who had shown a great deal of patience to wait for the action to get underway.

Postecoglou and Spurs are set to face Lion City Sailors next, meanwhile the Foxes will face Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool on Jul 30.
