King Charles made an extremely awkward comment to Spurs captain Heung-Min Son during a visit to the club's stadium.

His Royal Highness was at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday as part of a visit to see the "positive socio-economic" impact the club is having in its local community.

He met a number of individuals who have benefited from the various programmes and initiatives supported by the club and after walking out on the pitch, observed a session from The Huddle Project – a project delivered from Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, NFL Foundation and Nike.

The King also received commemorative gifts from Spurs and the NFL and was introduced to Son, women's skipper Bethany England, British-born NFL player Efe Obada and Phoebe Schecter, GB Women’s Flag Football team captain.

But when he spoke to Son, the monarch had an uncomfortable conversation with the South Korea star and was blissfully unaware of Spurs' recent struggles.

The 76-year-old asked Son about the next game, with the former Hamburg forward revealing that Spurs take on United on Sunday.

When King Charles asked if Spurs had a "good chance, Son said "I hope so". Then, with chairman Daniel Levy in the background, the King wondered if "the team is in order at the moment".

With Spurs down in 14th place in the Premier League and with their only chance of winning a trophy in the Europa League, Son acknowledged that the club is in a "difficult moment" but "are working hard".

Footage of the exchange was shared by ESPN and fans on Reddit couldn't help but respond.

One fan said: "Levy’s face lmao, he was preparing for Sonny to say we’re s**t."

A second commented: "He was searching for the right words because his brain was instantly offering only swear words instead.

A third added: "Sonny couldn't break poor Grandpa Charles' heart by telling him what what he really thinks."

A fourth wrote: "I mean at least he’s honest."

A final user joked: "Must be good to be the king and take the p*** out of absolutely anyone."

Who does King Charles support?

Interestingly, the King has pledged loyalty for Championship side Burnley in 2010, and was offered a VIP season ticket and a place in their directors’ box after a visit to Turf Moor.

Then, when attending a reception and dinner for the British Asian Trust in 2012, he confirmed that he supports the Clarets.

The King said: “Hence, some of you asked this evening whether I support a British football club and I said, ‘Yes, Burnley.’

“And people have responded ‘Burnley?’ Oh, yes, because Burnley has been through some very challenging times and I’m trying to find ways of helping to regenerate and raise aspirations and self-esteem in that part of the world.

“My charities have been working there together to demonstrate that an integrated approach can produce the best dividends.”
