Jamie Redknapp Issues Formal Apology Live on Sky During Bournemouth vs Fulham Coverage

Sky's coverage was briefly paused for Redknapp's apology.

Jamie Redknapp issued a formal apology live on-air during Sky Sports' coverage of the Premier League fixture between Bournemouth and Fulham.

Bournemouth came back from 1-0 down in the second half to win 3-1 at Dean Court.

Two goals from Antoine Semenyo and a Justin Kluivert strike moved Andoni Iraola's side to second place in the Premier League, only behind Liverpool.

Redknapp was on punditry duty for the fixture alongside former Fulham midfielder Steve Sidwell.

During the coverage, the ex-Tottenham captain issued a formal apology to former Spurs chairman Alan Sugar.

Last month, in a segment covering the exit of Daniel Levy from Spurs, Redknapp claimed that Sugar had left the north London club 'in a mess' when he sold his majority stake in the club to ENIC in 2001.

The long-time Apprentice host initially purchased his stake in Spurs in 1991, alongside Terry Venables, and spent 10 years as chairman.

He then sold his remaining 12 per cent share to ENIC in 2007, formally cutting ties with the club.

After Redknapp's claim, Sugar took to Twitter to state that the ex-Spurs midfielder and Sky Sports would be 'hearing from my lawyers'.

In a subsequent tweet, he added: "I am coming for you @MrJamieRedknapp idiot."

Sky briefly cut away from their coverage of Bournemouth versus Fulham to broadcast Redknapp's apology, with the 52-year-old stating: "I said at the time that Lord Sugar left the club 'in a mess'.

"I just want to make clear that he stabilised the club and invested heavily during his time as chairman.

"When he took over in 1991, Spurs were close to bankruptcy, and by the time he stepped away the financial position had been turned around.

"I apologise to Lord Sugar and his family for any misunderstanding and for any distress caused, and am happy to set the record straight."

Sugar posted on social media that, 'by way of a further apology', a sum of £10,000 has been donated to the Great Ormond Street Hospital charity in London.
