Ruben Amorim is reportedly set to pocket a fortune following his Manchester United sacking.
On Monday (January 5), Amorim was sacked by Manchester United just hours after overseeing the side’s 1-1 draw against Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday (January 4).
In recent weeks, Amorim appeared frustrated in press conferences and claimed that he wanted to be United’s “manager” rather than just a coach in his post-match press conference following the Leeds game.
This led to speculation about whether there had been a disagreement between the Portuguese and United hierarchy in relation to his preferred 3-4-3 formation as well as player recruitment.

As reported by The Athletic, the decision was made by the club’s leadership team, including the chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox, after a “breakdown in relations” between themselves and the 40-year-old.

Meanwhile, in a club statement, United described how the club’s leadership “reluctantly” made the decision to sack Amorim and thanked him for his contribution to the football club.
This comes just 14 months after United paid £9.25 million to hire Amorim from Sporting CP in November 2024.
Back then, Amorim signed a contract through to 2027 with the option of a further year.
The deal reportedly did not include a clause to enable a discounted exit, meaning United have to pay up on his contract in full.
And with reports from The Sporting News suggesting Amorim received around £125,000 per week (£6.5 million a year), this equates to a payout of £9,625,000 due to him having 77 contracted weeks left on his deal until June 30, 2027.

Amorim brought five coaches - Carlos Fernandes, Jorge Vital, Adelio Candido, Emanuel Ferro, and Paulo Barreira - with him from Sporting, meaning they will likely be compensated if they exit the club. Although details on the future of the quintet remain unclear.
As reported by ESPN, United were forced to pay a compensation bill of £14.5 million to Erik ten Hag, his coaching team, and then-sporting director Dan Ashworth following the Dutchman’s dismissal in October 2024.
Following Amorim’s departure, former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca and current Crystal Palace head coach Oliver Glasner have emerged as the front-runners to take up the vacancy.
Former United midfielder Darren Fletcher will take charge of the side on an interim basis and will be in the dugout for United’s Premier League clash against Burnley on Wednesday (January 7).
