Manchester United fans have spotted two significant words in the club's announcement of manager Ruben Amorim's departure.

Amorim has been sacked as United manager after 14 months in charge due to a 'breakdown in relations behind the scenes', according to The Athletic.

His last game in charge was Sunday's 1-1 draw at rivals Leeds, with United currently sixth in the Premier League table.

Rumours surrounding Amorim's upcoming departure originated from the man himself, who claimed after the Leeds draw that he had joined United to be 'a manager, not a coach'.

In their official announcement of Amorim's appointment back in November 2024, he was referred to as the 'head coach' of Manchester United.

The club used the same term again in their statement confirming his sacking - which fans quickly noticed given Amorim's recent comments.

One wrote: "They had to point out that [he's] the head coach."

A second said: "They even called him head coach in their statement."

While a third stated: "Crashing out over not being called a manager only to be addressed as a head coach in your sack announcement is rough."

What does Man Utd's statement say?

United's statement, in full, reads: "Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United.

"Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May.

"With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club's leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.

"The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.

"Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday."

Amorim comments spark Man Utd exit

Amorim caused a stir on Sunday afternoon when he abruptly walked out of his press conference following United's 1-1 draw at Leeds.

In addition to his 'manager, not a coach' remarks, the 40-year-old also suggested he would quit the club by the end of his contract in the summer of 2027.

He signed an initial three-and-a-half year deal with United when he left Sporting in November 2024, and The Athletic report that United will have to pay him compensation in full due to the terms of his contract.

Amorim told reporters: "Every department, the scouting department, the sporting director, needs to do their job. I will do mine, for 18 months, and then we move on.

"I came here to be the manager of Manchester United. Not the coach of Manchester United. That is clear.

"I know that my name is not [Thomas] Tuchel. It's not [Antonio] Conte. It's not [Jose] Mourinho. I'm the manager of Manchester United.

"It's going to be like this for 18 months, or until the board decide to change. That is my point.

"I'm not going to quit. I will do my job until another guy comes here to replace me."
