Fans noticed an apparent error from Rob McElhenney when discussing Wrexham in an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

The 47-year-old was one of the guests on the most recent episode on ABC and spoke about It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, his recent purchase of a further two teams, Philadelphia Eagles reaching the Super Bowl and Wrexham's push for an unprecedented third consecutive promotion.

McElhenney, along with fellow Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds, bought Wrexham in February 2021 after receiving a strong backing from the 2,000 members of the Wrexham Supporters Trust.

Under the ownership of Reynolds and McElhenney, Wrexham have achieved back-to-back promotions after winning the National League and taking the second automatic promotion spot in League Two last season.

Phil Parkinson's side are in an excellent position to make it a historic third promotion, currently occupying third spot with 52 points from 28 games played.

In League One, three teams go up to the Championship - the top two automatically and the final side advancing courtesy of the play-offs.

However, in his talk show appearance, McElhenney appeared to suggest that the top three are promoted - which is not technically the case as fourth, fifth or sixth can go up.

"We are currently in third place and the top three teams get promoted," McElhenney said.

"We have been promoted already twice and we're about halfway through this season.

"If we do, this will be the first time in the history of English football that a team has gone up three times in a row."

But some supporters pointed out that McElhenney was incorrect in his statement, with one fan on Reddit writing: "He seems to imply that by being in 3rd on the table they would get promoted, when they would actually just qualify for the playoffs. He's still thinking in League Two terms."

A second said: "He may be confusing it with League Two though, which actually was the top three teams get automatic promotion."

Another weighed in with a measured response, commenting: "He isn't wrong. He just didn't explain that the 3rd Place team is decided by the playoff."

A fourth user added: "He's literally just dumbing it down for an American audience that vastly does not watch the sport. He knows exactly what Wrexham need. He's just not trying to complicate it for people that don't."

A final person stated: "For a 20 second explanation that was fine. Not 100% accurate but he was speaking to the audience not familiar with the competition or structure."

McElhenney did struggle with the rules initially after acquiring Wrexham but has spoken about the play-off system previously and is aware of the format.

Wrexham are eight points clear of seventh-placed Bolton, who are just outside of the play-off spots.

The Red Dragons are back in action on Saturday when they travel to play Crawley Town.
