Despite the summer transfer window being closed on Friday evening, Premier League clubs can still lose players after the deadline.

Transfer deadline day is highly anticipated with plenty of clubs scrambling to get deals over the line and completed before the window closes at 11pm BST.

While Premier League clubs won't be able to sign any players until January once the window closes, they could still lose players. But why?

To the frustration of clubs and managers, transfer windows around the world don't align.

While clubs in Europe's top five leagues all work up to the Friday night deadline, plenty of teams in other leagues could still sign Premier League players beyond Friday.

Saudi Pro League clubs have until the evening of Monday, September 2 to sign players from abroad, meaning there could yet be some high profile departures to the Gulf State.

On Friday Brentford accepted a £40 million offer from Al Ahli for Ivan Toney, with the striker having already agreed personal terms with the club.

Clubs in the Netherlands, Portugal and Norway also have until Monday, while a host of European nations including Denmark and Belgium have deadlines later in the week.

Turkish clubs have signed several Premier League players in recent years, and they can do so for another two weeks as the Turkish transfer window does not close until September 13.

While Premier League clubs cannot complete transfers after Friday's deadline, they are permitted to sign free agents at any time.
