Manchester United and England legend Wayne Rooney has named his best and worst team-mates during his professional football career.

Rooney retired in 2021 to bring to an end a 19-year professional career that saw him become United and England's record goalscorer.

He won 16 trophies while at Old Trafford, including five Premier Leagues and one Champions League, and spent time as England captain after the 2014 World Cup.

Either side of his hugely successful stint at United, Rooney had two spells at boyhood club Everton, and ended his career at Championship side Derby, where he would become manager.

Throughout his career, the England star played with some of the greatest players of his generation, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand and more.

Now, the current boss of Championship side Birmingham has revealed his best team-mate - and a player he found the toughest to play alongside.

Speaking on the Seven: Rob Burrow podcast with England rugby legend Rob Burrow, Rooney explained: "My best team-mate, I'd say Darren Fletcher.

"There were a few - John O'Shea, Wes Brown, Michael Carrick - we were all really close. But Fletch was probably the one We sat next to each other in the dressing room and shared really good moments on and off the pitch together.

"My worst team-mate - there are a lot more than you'd probably think!

"On the pitch, the toughest one was Nani. He was frustrating to play with."

Fletcher joined United's youth setup at the age of 11 and went on to make over 300 appearances under Sir Alex Ferguson, David Moyes and Louis van Gaal before leaving in 2015.

Like Rooney, the Scot won five Premier League titles and a Champions League at United, but was unfortunate to miss out on playing in all three European finals in which United reached during his time there.

After spells at West Brom and Stoke, Fletcher retired from playing in 2019, and is now back at Old Trafford as the club's technical director.

Nani, meanwhile, was one of United's most technically gifted players throughout his eight-year spell at the club, and was known for his trickery and incredible skill on the ball.

The Portuguese winger, now 36, left United in the same summer as Fletcher and has since played in Turkey, Spain, Italy, Portugal and the United States.

He also had a short spell with Australian A-League side Melbourne Victory last year, and currently plays for Turkish side Adana Demirspor - who are managed by Barcelona and Ajax legend Patrick Kluivert.
