Wayne Rooney has revealed the unusual pre-match ritual that allowed him to settle down before matches.

Rooney will go down in history as one of the finest players England have ever produced having played over 700 matches for the likes of Everton, Manchester United, DC United and Derby County.

The former striker was also capped 120 times by England and was the country’s top scorer with 53 goals until Harry Kane broke the record in March 2023.

After retiring in 2021, Rooney has moved into the world of management and has been in charge of Derby, DC United and Birmingham City.

Over the weekend, the 38-year-old was confirmed as Championship side Plymouth Argyle’s new head coach.

Speaking on a recent episode of The Overlap, brought to you by Sky Bet, Rooney revealed the song he listened to prior to matches which allowed him to settle down.

He said: “I’d normally get on the massage bed, and I’d actually put Susan Boyle on.

“It just helped me settle down – only for that little bit of time I was on the massage bed.”

During the interview with former teammate Gary Neville, Rooney also revealed his dream to manage United.

He said: “It’s a tough one because I’ve always said that I’d love to manage Everton or Manchester United.

“I’d probably say United – that would be the pinnacle to manage Manchester United. Everton would be more from an emotional standpoint, a club I support and love, but United would be the pinnacle really.”

Upon being announced as Plymouth Argyle’s new boss, Rooney told the club’s official website: “Taking this role at Plymouth Argyle feels like the perfect next step in my career – and I would like to thank the Chairman and Board for the faith they have shown in me.

“This is an opportunity to be part of an exciting project. I look forward to helping to build a squad of players to play expansive football – and to entertain the Green Army.”
