Wayne Rooney ‘approached’ for managerial return four months after disastrous Birmingham spell

Wayne Rooney ‘approached’ for managerial return four months after disastrous Birmingham spell

Could Wayne Rooney be making a return to management?

Wayne Rooney has reportedly been approached for a return to management four months after his disastrous spell with Birmingham City ended.

Back in October 2023, England and Manchester United legend Rooney left MLS side DC United for Championship side Birmingham.

However, it was a disastrous appointment as the Blues fell from sixth place in the Championship to 20th.

Eventually, Rooney was sacked in January after just 15 matches in charge.

Birmingham ended up being relegated to League One on the final match day of the 23/24 Championship campaign.

Now, four months after his dismissal by Birmingham, Rooney has reportedly been approached for a return to management.

As reported by The Telegraph, Championship side Plymouth Argyle has approached the 38-year-old for a potential return to the dugout.

The report stated: “Argyle are searching for a new manager after the dismissal of Ian Foster and their pursuit of Rooney is being driven by the club’s director of football Neil Dewsnip.

“Rooney was at Everton’s academy as a boy when Dewsnip was in charge and the pair are believed to have maintained a close relationship.”

Aside from Rooney, it has been claimed that Argyle have already spoken to former Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom about the vacancy.

In the 23/24 season, Argyle finished in 21st place in the Championship after a tough season.

Back in February, Rooney spoke about his desire to return to management. He said: “I definitely want to get back into management. It was a setback what happened at Birmingham but I’m a fighter and I want to get back into it.

“You know as a manager [being sacked] is part of the job and you will have setbacks. It’s about how you bounce back. I’ve had some good time to reflect and will make sure I get it right next time.”
