Premier League history not seen for 26 years could be made in Leeds v Newcastle tonight

Leeds United must beat Newcastle United in the final match of Premier League matchday four this evening to prevent a rare piece of top-flight history from being made for the first time in 26 years.

After an entertaining weekend of fixtures, Daniel Farke’s Leeds host Matthias Jaissle’s Newcastle in what promises to be an exciting occasion at Elland Road.

A win for either side would see them catapult up the Premier League table to at least fourth place, a position Brighton and Hove Albion currently occupy after their 5-0 win at struggling Coventry. A win will no doubt be on the wishlist of both managers, but if the home side fail to secure one, Premier League history will be made.

If the Whites draw or lose, then, for the first time since September 23 and 24, 2000, none of the ten home sides will have won across a single matchday – something which has not happened in 26 years.

Matchday four has thrown up several unexpected results, with Oliver Glasner’s Nottingham Forest beating Unai Emery’s Aston Villa 2-1 at Villa Park on Saturday (September 12).

On the same day, Bournemouth were held to a 2-2 draw by Brentford, while Chelsea were lucky to secure a point after trailing twice to Hull City at Stamford Bridge before João Pedro rescued a 2-2 draw.

Elsewhere, Zian Flemming scored his first goal for Ipswich Town as they secured a last-gasp 3-2 win against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, while Fulham held Liverpool to a 0-0 draw at Anfield. Everton also frustrated Spurs, holding Roberto De Zerbi’s side to another 0-0 draw on Saturday evening.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal managed a 2-0 win over Régis Le Bris’ Sunderland at the Stadium of Light to round off Saturday’s fixtures.

On Sunday (September 13), the trend of away wins continued, with Brighton demolishing Coventry City 5-0 before Erling Haaland’s controversial goal helped Manchester City to a 1-0 win against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

When has a Premier League matchday previously featured no home wins?

As previously mentioned, matchday seven of the 2000/01 campaign saw none of the ten home sides win. Southampton beat Bradford City 1-0, West Ham won 3-0 away at Coventry and Charlton won 1-0 at Newcastle, while the other 14 teams played out draws.

The first time such history was made came during the 1994/95 campaign, when none of the home teams won their matchday 20 fixtures. Aston Villa held Arsenal to a 0-0 draw at Highbury, while Chelsea suffered a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.
