Ruben Amorim effectively has three games to save his Manchester United career, according to a new report – and five candidates have been identified to potentially replace him.

Things are looking bleak for Amorim and United, who have made their worst start to a Premier League season in 33 years after they were outclassed in the Manchester derby on Sunday.

It was another damaging defeat for one of the most under-pressure managers in world football.

Having picked up just eight wins from 31 league games since replacing Erik ten Hag in November, Amorim has the lowest win percentage of any permanent United manager since World War II.

And it appears patience is running thin, despite recent assurances from the United board that Amorim still has their full support and there are no plans for a managerial change.

A report from The Mirror suggests the Portuguese coach 'effectively' has three games to save his job at United after taking four points from their opening four Premier League games.

"Despite privately insisting they still have faith in Amorim, United's football leadership team gave the same assurances to Erik ten Hag, before pulling the plug on him nine league games into last season," the report adds.

United face the unbeaten Chelsea at Old Trafford on Saturday before a notoriously difficult trip to Brentford on September 27. They will then face newly-promoted Sunderland in what could be a crucial home game for Amorim.

Who would replace Ruben Amorim? Five candidates emerge

Just as he was last year, Gareth Southgate is named as one of the potential candidates to take the United job.

It was reported in March 2024 that co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe had made the former Three Lions boss his number one choice to replace then-manager Erik ten Hag.

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner is also named on the five-man shortlist alongside Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola and Fulham's Marco Silva, another manager who has been mentioned previously.

Mauricio Pochettino is also in the frame to take over should Amorim be sacked, according to The Mirror.

The Argentine, who is now in charge of the United States national team, has been linked with the United job on numerous occasions, with his representatives speaking to the club following his exit from Chelsea in 2024.
