Ruben Amorim could give green light to Man Utd final tradition which Erik ten Hag vetoed when he was in charge

Ruben Amorim has guided Manchester United to the Europa League final after a 7-1 aggregate win over Athletic Club.

Ruben Amorim could bring back Manchester United's tradition for his first final in charge of the Red Devils.

Despite struggles in the Premier League, United have reached the Europa League final for the third time after hammering Athletic Club 7-1 on aggregate over two legs in the semi-final.

The Red Devils will take on Spurs in an all-English final in Bilbao on Wednesday 21 May, with the winner securing qualification to next season's Champions League.

Amorim lost the Europa League final with Benfica back in 2014, suffering a penalty shoot-out defeat to Sevilla in Turin.

He is eager to win the competition to well and truly get his reign at Old Trafford up in his first attempt at silverware and Amorim could look to do the opposite of what his predecessor Erik ten Hag did for his first final as United manager.

What is Man United's cup final tradition?

Club suits were United tradition enforced by Sir Alex Ferguson, who made the team arrive at away games with their suit and even sport the attire while boarding the plane.

David Moyes and Louis van Gaal did also follow the tradition, which Ole Gunnar Solskjaer cared deeply about and brought back in on a stricter basis before it was reserved for cup finals after COVID-19 in March 2020.

United wore suits for the 2021 Europa League final but tracksuits were opted for ahead of the 2023 Carabao Cup final which Ten Hag and his team won.

Players were supposed to wear suits designed by Paul Smith, a long-time partner and tailor but Ten Hag other ideas.

According to The Sun, the Dutchman felt it messed with the schedule and would take up an extra ten minutes from their itinerary because of the time it would take to get changed into training gear for a pre-match walk on the pitch.

Prior to the game, Ten Hag called an official who was on the other side of the world to tell him his thoughts and he agreed.

For the FA Cup finals against Manchester City at Wembley under Ten Hag, United wore their Paul Smith suits - before turning up in tracksuits for the Community Shield in August.

Amorim has a casual approach to his touchline attire but he and United stars wore smart suits for the funeral of late receptionist Kath Phipps in January.
