Roy Keane Was Brutally Rejected By Only Player He Asked To Swap Shirts With

Keane was swiftly turned down - and decided he would never ask another player again.

Roy Keane only ever asked one player to swap shirts with him during his career - but was turned down.

As one of the Premier League's most feared players, Keane patrolled Manchester United's midfield between 1993 and 2005, making over 450 appearances for the club.

Eight of those years were spent as captain, with his strong leadership laying down the platform for United to win 10 trophies - including four Premier League titles and the 1999 Champions League - during that time.

Keane was a no-nonsense midfielder turned Sky Sports pundit, so it perhaps won't come as a surprise to many that he did not enjoy swapping shirts with the opposition after a match.

However, the Irishman did make one notable exception early on in his career - only to be rejected by the player.

Speaking to former United team-mate Gary Neville on The Overlap in 2021, Keane reminisced on how the Republic of Ireland defeated Germany in a friendly ahead of the 1994 World Cup.

Then aged 22, Keane decided to ask Germany midfielder/sweeper Mathias Sammer for his shirt.

Sammer would go on to win the 1997 Champions League with Borussia Dortmund but was forced to retire aged just 30 due to knee injuries.

He recalled: "I've asked one player to swap a jersey - which I regret - when we played Germany with Ireland. Once, to swap a player from Germany, the pre-94 World Cup. We played Germany in a friendly.

"After the game, we beat them, and I was being polite. The sweeper, Sammer. And he said 'No'. I went, 'F**k'.

"Anyway, that was it. I thought, 'I shouldn't be asking anyway'. But I was just being polite - if I really wanted a jersey, I'd have gone Zidane or somebody.

"So after that I just went, 'You know what, it's stupid swapping shirts, really'.

"I remember we played Zidane with United, and after the Madrid game, we were walking up ... I was looking at him, he was looking at me. I was thinking, 'Ah, he's probably going to ask me'. But no, we didn't. And I'm glad. That's the only other time where I thought, but nah, leave it."
