Man Utd's first two January exits planned as Ruben Amorim looks to change squad after torrid start

The Manchester United head coach may look to freshen up his options in the transfer window.

Two Manchester United players are ‘set’ to be loaned out by the club in the January transfer window.

United currently sit 14th in the Premier League, just seven points outside of the relegation zone after 19 games.

On Monday, they played out a 2-0 defeat against Newcastle United at Old Trafford, taking Ruben Amorim’s record as United boss to five Premier League defeats in just eight league games since taking charge of the club in November 2024.

Of course, Amorim, 39, is yet to sign a single player, as the transfer window opened two days ago. But on Wednesday, he was dealt a huge blow when the MEN’s Samuel Luckhurst revealed that due to the £206.06m spent on the five summer recruits - Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui, Joshua Zirkzee, Manuel Ugarte and Leny Yoro – the club may have to “sell to buy” in the January window.

The club may not be able to spend the money they would like due to PSR and financial fair play regulations.

"We don't have that possibility [to make signing] in January if we don't take some players [out]," said Amorim on Monday [via BBC Sport].

"You know the situation better than me.

"It is not that I am arriving here and know I can spend money changing the team."

However, there may yet be some movement on the transfer front. According to Manchester World, United are prioritising “loan exits” for two academy stars.

The Red Devils pride themselves on allowing academy graduates chances in the first-team set-up and have included a homegrown player in every matchday squad since 1937, a tradition which was embraced by legendary managers Sir Matt Busby and Sir Alex Ferguson.

Manchester World reports that both Harry Amass and Dan Gore could be loaned out during the January window.

Amass, 17, has been named as part of the senior squad on five occasions but has failed to make a competitive appearance for the club.

Gore, 20, has had a torrid time with injuries in recent years, which has stunted his development.

He has played twice for the first team, against Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup in 2023 and against Aston Villa in the Premier League on December 26, 2023.

Both players are likely to see loan moves to EFL clubs.
