The first Manchester United dressing room member has spoken out about the club’s decision to keep Erik ten Hag.

There has been much speculation around Ten Hag’s future at Old Trafford after a topsy-turvy campaign that saw United finish a dismal eighth in the Premier League but claim the FA Cup.

Despite a range of media reports claiming the club had registered an interest in the likes of Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino and Kieran McKenna, it emerged earlier this month that Ten Hag would remain in his role as United boss, with talks over a new contract for the Dutchman ongoing.

And speaking while on international duty at Euro 2024, United and England star Kobbie Mainoo said the club’s decision to stick with the 54-year-old heading into the new season gave him "peace of mind".

"Obviously happy to be building with him," said Mainoo. "He's already got two trophies and hopefully there are more to come. It is nice to have that peace of mind, that we know what manager we are going back to in the new season.

“I am so grateful for him, that he put so much trust in me and belief in me to play in the team. I can't thank him enough.”

The 19-year-old midfielder made his United debut under the manager and was entrusted to a key role this term, impressing to the degree that he broke in England’s Euro 2024 squad.

Having come off the bench in the Three Lions’ Group C win over Serbia, Mainoo looked ahead to Thursday’s fixture against Denmark, where he will go toe-to-toe with United team-mates Rasmus Hojlund and Christian Eriksen.

"They're both great teammates to me, Rasmus is young like me so I am always around him," he said. "I am trying to learn and pick up from Christian. If I'm to play on Thursday I'll have to put that to the side compete against him and hopefully get the win."
