Liverpool fans have had enough after hearing what Andoni Iraola admitted following Monaco defeat

Liverpool fans have snapped at the club's ownership after Andoni Iraola made a concerning admission following their 3-2 pre-season friendly defeat to Monaco.

The Reds lost their first match at Anfield under new head coach Iraola despite going 2-0 ahead inside the first half an hour.

Goals from Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz gave Liverpool what they thought was a comfortable advantage, but Aleksandr Golovin's penalty made it 2-1 going into half-time.

Monaco then completed a superb turnaround in the second half through goals from Mika Biereth and Paul Brunner.

It is the second time in a week that Liverpool have given up a two-goal advantage after they lost 4-2 to Leeds in Chicago last Saturday.

Results, though, are never of particular importance during pre-season, with building up match sharpness and getting used to any change in tactical patterns both much bigger priorities heading into the new campaign.

But that is why comments made by Iraola after the Monaco defeat have been all the more worrying for Liverpool fans.

"We played a good first half, especially a good 30 minutes," the Spaniard told reporters. "Right now, we probably don't have much more, in terms of the levels required to play like this. They [Monaco] deserved to turn around the game.

"We won the first two pre-season games, but the last two we cannot sustain the level we want for all of the game.

"As soon as we made some changes, players start to get tired and we cannot sustain that level. So we have to work to do."

Liverpool fans react to Iraola comments

Following those remarks, Reds fans have taken aim at the Liverpool ownership over their club's transfer activity so far this summer.

They signed winger Victor Munoz from Osasuna in June after activating his £34.5 million release clause, while centre-back Jeremy Jacquet arrived at the start of the window in a £55 million deal from Rennes. Jacquet was signed in January with a view to joining this season.

The Reds are expected to complete the loan signing of centre-back Ronald Araujo from Barcelona, though there has been a mixed reaction from Liverpool fans to his potential arrival given their manager Hansi Flick's decision to allow him to leave.

But various injuries mean that Jeremie Frimpong is the only natural right-back in the squad heading into the new campaign - although other players, including Araujo, can fill in there - and Liverpool fans have been calling out for enforcements both in defensive midfield and on both wings.

There is reported interest in PSG winger Bradley Barcola, but the Reds are yet to commit to paying close to the French club's asking price of £145 million.

"Zero depth in that squad, won't challenge on one front never mind four," one fan wrote in response to Iraola's comments.

"Hope this means work in the market," a second said.

While a third bemoaned: "I've never seen a Liverpool side so lacking in depth, I know we have injuries but this is unacceptable."

"This is very true. You can't expect to play high-intensity football with such a thin squad," another said.

While a fifth wrote: "Would help if they actually backed the manager."
