Erik ten Hag has been called out by supporters after a controversial decision came back to haunt Manchester United.

Ten Hag spent just over two years in charge at Old Trafford, winning the FA Cup and Carabao Cup before he was sacked in October 2024.

During his time in charge, United spent around £615 million on signings, including the disastrous £82 million deal for Antony.

But it is one of the players that he let go that left fans furious, with Alvaro Carreras now thriving at Real Madrid.

In January 2024, the Spanish left-back was loaned to Benfica, who chose to activate the £5 million optional buy clause in the summer.

Carreras impressed during his one year in Portugal, making 52 appearances as Benfica finished second in the league behind Sporting CP.

In June, Real Madrid then signed Carreras for €43 million and the young full-back has started every league match under Xabi Alonso this season.

His biggest test came in Sunday's El Clasico against Barcelona, where he faced Lamine Yamal.

But Carreras was excellent as Real Madrid won 2-1, with Yamal failing to register a shot on target all match.

After yet another strong display, United supporters took to social media to complain about ten Hag's transfer decisions.

One fan wrote: "I hate Erik ten Hag to my bone because he f*****g signed Onana and got rid of De Gea, and because he sold Alvaro Carreras to Benfica.

"Alvaro was pocketing Yamal last night. What an absolute baller."

Another fan added: "Bro Ten Hag benched Alvaro Carreras and played Amrabat at LB. Later sold him for Malacia."

A third user said: "Erik ten Hag thought it was a good idea to keep Diogo Dalot and sell Alvaro Carreras."

Some supporters even compared the young Spaniard to Real Madrid legend Marcelo.

One fan concluded: "Ten Hag sold Álvaro Carreras like he was offloading a spare training cone, and now he’s out here playing like prime Marcelo.

"ETH my god will judge you."

Since leaving United, Ten Hag's managerial career has continued to struggle.

He was sacked by Bayer Leverkusen in September after just three games in charge.

The Dutchman had succeeded Alonso in Germany, winning his first game in the DFB-Pokal, before losing their Bundesliga opener to Hoffenheim and drawing 3-3 with Werder Bremen.

Kasper Hjulmand has since replaced Ten Hag and Leverkusen are now fifth after eight games, but they trail Bayern Munich by seven points, with the champions boasting a perfect record.
