Jose Mourinho is eyeing a sensational return to Manchester United, according to stunning reports.

Mourinho, who is out of work following his AS Roma dismissal, has 'unfinished business' at Old Trafford and 'has made it his mission' to manage them again at some point in the future following his spell at Man United earlier in his managerial career.

He took charge of the Red Devils in 2016, replacing Louis van Gaal and was relieved of his duties in December 2018.

According to The Daily Mail, Mourinho is keen to work with the new regime at Man United, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS taking over football operations as part of the businessman's 25 per cent investment in the club.

"His ambition is to return to United," a source said of the situation. "He feels like he has unfinished business there after how it ended last time and he had made it his mission to go back."

The 61-year-old inspired Man United to Carabao Cup and Europa League glory in his first season.

He then earned a second-placed finish in the Premier League the following campaign.

A move back to Man United seems unlikely with Erik ten Hag only in his second season at the club following his appointment in April 2022.

But pressure is mounting on the Dutchman as his side endure a difficult campaign this season.

Their only chance of silverware is the FA Cup as they lie in ninth place in the league.

Mourinho, meanwhile, has been linked with managerial jobs in Saudi Arabia following his AS Roma sacking.

After being let go at Man United, he took over at Tottenham before heading to Italy.

The Portuguese is no stranger to returning to one of his former clubs, having returned to Chelsea following his first spell at Stamford Bridge.

He won the Premier League and League Cup in his second stint at Chelsea.
