Manchester United will be without one of their biggest academy prospects for the remainder of their Europa League campaign.

Ruben Amorim's side will travel to the Basque Country this week as they take on La Liga side Real Sociedad in the Europa League last 16 first leg.

After being knocked out of the FA Cup on Sunday, the Reds will be looking to bounce back with a positive result on Thursday night.

But despite his emergence in recent weeks, Chido Obi will not feature as the teenage forward was not included in their revised squad list for the UEFA competition.

The 17-year-old, who impressed against Fulham having replaced Rasmus Hojlund, was not registered when United submitted their initial squad list for the Europa League back in September.

He also missed on the revised squad last month, when Amorim decided to include January signings Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven to his squad.

Chido Obi would go on to make his United debut on February 16 against Spurs but despite his increase in first-team action, the Dane is unable to be included for the remainder of their Europa League campaign.

More often than not, a player of his age would be added to the B-List, which effectively allows an unlimited amount of youngsters to be added to the squad before each matchday.

But as per UEFA regulations, only club-trained players born on or after 1 January 2003, who have been with their employers for an uninterrupted period of a minimum of two years, are allowed to be considered for selection on the B-List.

Chido Obi, of course, only joined United in September following the expiration of his schoolboy deal at Arsenal.

The rule states: "A player may be registered on List B if he is born on or after 1 January 2003 and has, since his 15th birthday, been eligible to play for the club concerned for any uninterrupted period of two years, or a total of three consecutive years with a maximum of one loan period to a club from the same association for a period not longer than one year.

"Players aged 16 may be registered on List B if they have been registered with the participating club for the previous two years without interruption."

As mentioned above, the teenager made an instant impression after replacing Hojlund in the 68th minute against Fulham, with Wayne Rooney and Alan Shearer heaping praise on the youngster.

"What I really like about him is he's put himself in some really good positions," said Rooney. "I've been really impressed by him. He looked like the one who could go on and nick it."

Rooney added: ""[He was a] little bit naive with some of his chances but I think it's really encouraging for Manchester United. They've obviously got Zirkzee and Hojlund not scoring. Now, that might be another option moving forward in the season."

Alan Shearer also chipped in with a comment about Chido Obi, saying: “He’s been a real handful in there you know. He’s certainly offered a lot more than Hojlund has when he was on the pitch. He’s been a nuisance and tough to play against."
