Manchester United are 'close' to wrapping up the signing of a free agent, just hours after it was reported that they had agreed a £50 million deal with Chelsea to buy Andrey Santos.
Santos, who is set to join Michael Carrick's side in a deal worth £48 million plus £2 million in add-ons, is preparing to undergo a medical at United as they continue to overhaul their midfield.
The departure of Casemiro, paired with the long-term absence of Manuel Ugarte, who suffered an ACL injury at the World Cup, has meant further reinforcements are needed in central areas.
As well as midfield, United are moving to address their goalkeeping situation, with Andre Onana joining Turkish side Trabzonspor on a season-long loan deal. Altay Bayindir is also expected to depart.

It was reported earlier this month that United were considering a move for Karl Darlow as they searched for a back-up goalkeeper.
The 35-year-old, who left Leeds this summer following the expiry of his contract, started every game for Daniel Farke's side from mid-January to the end of the season after replacing previous number one Lucas Perri.

Everton were also said to be interested but United are close to completing a deal for Darlow, according to a report from The Athletic, which suggests the club are in the 'advanced stages' of bringing him to Old Trafford.

The report also states that Darlow ticked all the boxes for United as they looked to bring in a goalkeeper with Premier League experience. He will also provide back-up for Lammens as they prepare for life in the Champions League.
Some expected Radek Vitek to get his chance. The 22-year-old Czech shot-stopper, who impressed on loan at Championship side Bristol City this season, is expected to leave United on loan or permanently.
Tom Heaton, meanwhile, recently extended his contract for another year and will continue "playing an important leadership role in the dressing room".
The 40-year-old joined the Reds in 2021."It is a huge honour to continue to represent Manchester United," he said. "I am really excited to play my role in driving us forward and helping the group to compete for the biggest honours."
