Man Utd reach final decision over sacking manager Erik ten Hag after end-of-season review

United have come to a decision over Ten Hag's future at Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag will reportedly stay on as Manchester United manager following the club's end-of-season review.

Ten Hag's future has been the subject of intense speculation in recent weeks, which only increased following United's surprise win over rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

United's owners INEOS have reportedly held talks with several managers over potentially replacing Ten Hag but the Dutchman is now set to remain at Old Trafford.

The Athletic report that United held talks with the 54-year-old on Tuesday and 'the preference of both parties was for his tenure to continue'.

Ten Hag's current United contract runs until next June, with an option to extend by 12 months.

The club are now expected to enter discussions with the former Ajax manager over a new deal.

It had looked likely that Ten Hag would be dismissed as manager this summer following United's eighth-place finish in the Premier League, their worst finish since the competition began in 1992.

But a shock 2-1 victory over City in the FA Cup final at Wembley boosted his chances of remaining in charge.

Following that win, United conducted a review of the 2023/24 campaign and of Ten Hag's individual performance.

In case a change of manager was deemed necessary, United contacted several potential replacements including Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino, Roberto De Zerbi and Kieran McKenna.

But the club have instead decided to stick with Ten Hag, with United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS sporting director Sir Dave Brailsford playing a key role in the decision.

The Daily Mail claim United officials 'want to see how Ten Hag operates' under what they believe will be a new structure 'aimed at ensuring he is given the best opportunity to succeed'.

Omar Berrada is due to arrive from rivals City as chief executive on July 13, while Jason Wilcox has already joined as technical director – with Dan Ashworth also expected to move to Old Trafford from Newcastle as sporting director.

Speaking after the FA Cup final win, Ten Hag defended his record as manager and suggested the club would be making a mistake if he was sacked.

"Two trophies in two years is not bad, three finals in two years is not bad," said the Dutchman, who also won the Carabao Cup in his first season at Old Trafford.

"If they don't want me, then I go somewhere else to win trophies because that is what I do."
