Darren Fletcher has revealed what he asked Sir Alex Ferguson before agreeing to become Manchester United's interim boss following Ruben Amorim's sacking.

On Monday morning, it was confirmed that Amorim had left Old Trafford following a turbulent spell in charge.

In a statement, United said that they had to 'reluctantly' make a change in order to give the team the best chance of finishing higher in the Premier League table.

It was also noted that Fletcher, a former Red Devils player, would take charge of the first team for the match against Burnley on Wednesday night.

On Tuesday evening, Fletcher spoke to the media for the first time as United's interim boss.

The 41-year-old revealed that he had a conversation with legendary figure Ferguson, and made sure to ask for his blessing before taking the job.

Fletcher said: "I have (spoken to him). I don’t like to make any major decisions or things without speaking to Sir Alex and that’s something I’ve done since I’ve been at the club and since I’ve left the club and (in) everything I do. I’ve got a really good relationship with Sir Alex, so he’s probably the first person on the phone actually, so I wanted to speak to him first.

"And ultimately to get his blessing, to be perfectly honest with you – I think he deserves that respect. I wanted to run it by him, (find out) what he thought and he was supportive of it and he echoed my thoughts which I’ve always said. (He said), ‘When you’re an employee of the club, it’s your job to do your best for Manchester United.’"

He continued: "It’s amazing when he says something that I try and live and believe every day, so it was comforting for me for him to say that."

In recent days, it has been reported that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has emerged as the leading candidate to lead United for the remainder of the campaign.

It is believed that the Norwegian is willing to return to the club after his own sacking back in November 2021.

Meanwhile, the likes of Oliver Glasner, Enzo Maresca, Gareth Southgate and Zinedine Zidane have all been linked with a move to Old Trafford.
