Former Manchester United striker Anthony Martial played more than 45 minutes during Monterrey’s Liga MX clash against Toluca on Thursday - and fans were quick to issue their verdict.
Martial, 29, became the world’s most expensive teenager when he signed for Manchester United from AS Monaco for a £36m fee back in 2015, but failed to fulfil the expectations many people had for him during his time at Old Trafford – although he did win the FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League with the Red Devils.
After leaving United in 2024, the France international joined Greek side AEK Athens and scored nine goals in 24 appearances during his time in Greece.
Earlier in September, he made the switch to Mexico, joining Monterrey, where Real Madrid and Spain icon Sergio Ramos currently plays his football.

Martial made his debut for the side in second half stoppage time of Monterrey’s 2-2 draw against Club America on Sunday, but was given a greater opportunity against Toluca.

The 29-year-old played 51 minutes in what was an eventful game. Toluca ran out 6-2 winners, with Ramos even seeing his ‘Panenka’ penalty saved while Monterrey led 1-0 before the home side counter-attacked and scored shortly after.
Meanwhile, Martial did not have his best game, and his statistics from the fixture do not reflect kindly on the former Premier League star.

The Frenchman failed to register a goal contribution or a shot during the game.
And fans were quick to offer their honest verdict on Martial’s cameo shortly after full-time.

One said: “Anthony Martial has already realised that he arrived at the smallest and most cold-hearted team in all of Mexican football. Hahahahaha, his face says it all.”

Another added: “I have a mixed opinion of Anthony Martial, guy, when I see him doesn’t convey ANYTHING to me, I feel like he’s smoke, but the times I see him, he has some spark but doesn’t even fight for the ball.”
A third explained: “I feel sorry for Anthony Martial; it’s tough to see him move from playing for Manchester United to the Mexican league.”
A fourth commented: “If someone had told me ten years ago that I would see Anthony Martial playing at Monterrey, I would have laughed like crazy.”
Monterrey will return to action against Santos Laguna on September 28.
