Manchester United are reportedly keen on opening talks to sign a former Manchester City midfielder who previously played under Pep Guardiola.

Since Michael Carrick succeeded Ruben Amorim as Manchester United head coach back in January, the Red Devils have seen an upturn in their form, with the Englishman leading the side to three wins and one draw in four matches.

Summer signings Matheus Cunha, Senne Lammens and Bryan Mbeumo have all made a positive impact on the squad, while Benjamin Sesko is still finding his feet in the Premier League despite making important contributions in recent weeks, with the Slovenian scoring a late winner against Fulham as well as a last-gasp equaliser against West Ham United.

Carrick’s future remains uncertain, with the Newcastle-born head coach contracted to United until the summer of 2026.

The 20-time Premier League champions are currently fourth in the English top flight, which would secure them Champions League football should they remain in the same position after 38 games.

Playing in the 2026/27 Champions League would likely make United an attractive destination for players seeking a move this summer.

As reported by TeamTalk, United are in the market for a replacement for the soon-to-be out-of-contract Casemiro, who has already confirmed that he will leave this summer.

Several Premier League midfielders, including Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton, remain linked with a move to Old Trafford, while TeamTalk also claims that United will open talks with representatives of former Manchester City and current Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha.

Nmecha, 25, came through the ranks at Man City between 2007 and 2019 before going on to make three senior appearances for the club prior to transferring to Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg in 2021.

He was not handed a new contract by City as Guardiola supposedly deemed him not good enough.

Since then, the Germany international has impressed and also earned himself a move to Dortmund in 2023.

Since arriving at Dortmund, he has registered 13 goals and eight assists in 103 appearances and helped the side reach the 2023/24 Champions League final.

Nmecha, who is contracted to the Bundesliga side until June 2028, is valued at around £52 million by the German giants, with United facing competition from Spurs and Chelsea.
