Manchester United have held talks with a 'secret' midfielder in the last 24 hours over a potential six-month loan move, according to reports.

It was suggested this week that United have no plans to make new signings in January as none of their leading midfield targets, which include Adam Wharton, Elliott Anderson and Carlos Baleba, are available to buy.

Moreover, the club's hierarchy believe new caretaker manager Michael Carrick has enough depth in his squad to challenge in the remaining months of the 2025-26 season, according to ESPN.

However, it has since emerged that United have opened talks with an unnamed midfielder over a potential loan deal until the end of the season.

It is said the midfielder has Premier League experience and is currently playing outside of England.

The somewhat surprising news comes from journalist Ben Jacobs, who dropped the transfer bombshell during a chat with The Football Terrace on Friday.

Speaking on the YouTube channel, he said: "There is one secret midfielder that Manchester United held talks with in the last 24 hours. Hopefully, I'll be able to report a few more details in the coming days."

Jacobs continued: "It is just an indication that they are not exactly shutting up shop. They are in talks with at least one midfielder for a loan on a short-term deal. Whether or not it develops, let's see.

"I'm not yet in a position where I can divulge the name. The midfielder would only be available until the end of the season on a loan. They have got Premier League experience and are currently playing outside of England."

"At this stage, that's all I can report. It may not even develop."

Despite reports suggesting otherwise, Jacobs believes there could be some transfer activity at Old Trafford in the remaining weeks of the window.

"They have made an enquiry," he said. "It just shows you that they are not discounting backing Michael Carrick, much like his own role, with something from now until the end of the season."

Jacobs added: "It would not stagger anyone if they didn't do anything, but they are definitely going to use this window time to explore opportunities, particularly in central midfield."

The journalist also played down one of the most popular suggestions. "The name I'm referencing is not Ruben Neves," he confirmed. "I note the player is currently playing in Europe, not Saudi Arabia."
