Wrexham set to make record signing of Man City player after beating Champions League club to signature

Wrexham are set to break their transfer record yet again after losing their opening two fixtures in the Championship.

Wrexham are set to respond to two defeats in their first two Championship fixtures by breaking their club-record yet again.

Backed by Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac, the Red Dragons have been extremely active in the transfer market this summer after securing a historic third promotion on the trot.

But they have not had an ideal start to life in the second tier, losing 2-1 in stoppage time away to Southampton in the opener and then suffering a 3-2 loss to West Brom at the Racecourse Ground.

There have been as many as nine new recruits at Wrexham but that total will soon reach double figures as according to Jordan Campbell of The Athletic, they are nearing a deal for Manchester City defender Callum Doyle.

Doyle, 21-year-old, has represented the Blues at various youth levels but never made a first-team appearance. However, the centre-back is already vastly experienced in the Championship, racking up nearly 100 appearances after loans with Coventry, Leicester and Norwich.

He has also attracted interest from Sheffield United and Rangers, who could offer him Champions League football if they get past Belgian side Club Brugge in the play-offs.

£8 million.

However, Doyle, who is from Manchester and still lives in the city, is believed to prefer a move to Wrexham because it works better location-wise.

It's claimed the transfer could be cost up to £8 million in add-ons, which would be a club-record for Wrexham.

They have smashed their transfer record on a number of occasions in recent times, doing so twice this summer with the arrivals of Lewis O'Brien, Liberato Cacace and Nathan Broadhead - who signed for an initial £7.5 million from Ipswich Town.

That total fee could reach £10 million but that would depend on Wrexham finally reaching the promised land of the Premier League.

Doyle, a left-footed defender, would appear to be a perfect fit to slot into Wrexham's back three alongside fellow new signing and former Leicester colleague Conor Coady.

Wrexham will have spent around £35 million if the Doyle deal gets over the line and manager Phil Parkinson has claimed the club have had to splash the cash in order to compete, having been in the National League three years ago.

"There's a lot of spending power in the division," Parkinson said as per ESPN.

"Really since day one, because we've moved so quickly as a club, we've always had to work hard to fast-track the quality level to the first team.

"We've always been playing catch up, even in the National League we were behind a lot of clubs development-wise - the structure, academy, players coming through.

"We had to improve the standard and that filters down. The structure behind the first team has become stronger with the formation of the academy a couple of years ago.

"We've come into this division very quickly and it's important we've brought in Championship standard players to help us on this journey. Also, to help the existing players who have do so well over the last few years."
