Manchester City are reportedly planning to make a move for a former Liverpool player who left the club before playing a single Premier League game under Jurgen Klopp.

After winning a record breaking four Premier League titles in a row, City have struggled to find their usual form in the early stages of the 2024/25 season.

Long-term rivals Liverpool currently sit five points ahead of the reigning champions atop the League table as they continue to impress under new manager Arne Slot, who replaced club legend Klopp over the summer.

But now, City are reportedly planning to secure the signing of a ex-Liverpool player that was neglected by Klopp to help get them back to them back on track.

According to FootballTransfers, Pep Guardiola is a keen admirer of Dutch defender Sepp van den Berg who departed Liverpool over the summer to join Brentford in a £25million deal.

Sources told the outlet that City boss first considered making a move for the 22-year-old after the defender went on loan to Preston North End while he was still signed with Liverpool.

The centre-back had previously caught the Spaniard's eye during a pre-season friendly ahead of the 2021/22 campaign and he has been kept on City's radar since.

Van den Berg impressed during his four appearances at Liverpool, all in cup competitions during the 2019/20 season, but ultimately was deemed surplus to requirement and was listed for sale over the summer.

Having spent some time with Bundesliga side Schalke last season, Van den Berg attracted interest from several German clubs, including champions Beyer Leverkusen

But, ultimately it was Brentford that the Reds ultimately accepted an offer from and the youngster signed a five-year deal with the London club.

Therefore, the report claims that a source confirmed that it is likely that any potential move to Man City isn’t likely to be possible until next summer.

Since making the move, Van den Berg has made 12 appearances for Brentford, who have impressed so far this season, earning 18 points, putting themselves level with Tottenham Hotspur and ahead of Manchester United.
