A significant update on Manchester City's charges has emerged - on the same morning the club agreed a new lucrative contract with star player Erling Haaland.

Haaland has agreed to a new nine-and-a-half year contract with City, which will keep him in Manchester until the summer of 2034.

It is believed to be the longest contract in world football at present, with the Norwegian potentially extending his stay at City until beyond his 34th birthday.

In recent months, the club has had its private hearing into the charges related to alleged breaches of Premier League and UEFA financial rules.

It was long reported that those charges amounted to a total of 115, though reports since have stated that City are actually facing 129 charges due to an initial reporting error. Both City and the Premier League have declined to comment on the matter.

Now, The Athletic claim that some sources with 'knowledge of the situation', in relation to the case, think that the sanction facing the club 'will not be more serious than a fine' in the event that they are found guilty of any of the charges laid in front of them.

It is suggested that the club's activity in terms of signing players and agreeing contract extensions 'would seem to reflect that feeling'.

Right now, however, a decision is yet to made on the case, with that decision expected in March. It is still unclear as to what penalty the club would receive if a guilty verdict is decided upon.

In terms of transfer business, Pep Guardiola's side have already agreed three moves in January - though have not finalised those signings as of yet.

They have agreed to sign Frankfurt forward Omar Marmoush for a fee believed to be in excess of £50 million, while Palmeiras defender Vitor Reis, 19, has already been spotted travelling to Manchester ahead of his £29.5 million move.

And City have also agreed to sign fellow centre-back Abdukodir Khusanov, with the Uzbekistan international set to join from Ligue 1 side Lens for £33.6 million.
