Liverpool legend claims Trent Alexander-Arnold could be sold for shock price as he's a 'poor defender'

Liverpool legend claims Trent Alexander-Arnold could be sold for shock price as he's a 'poor defender'

He thinks Liverpool could sell the England star.

A Liverpool legend has placed a surprising transfer fee on Trent Alexander-Arnold and suggested the club should sell him this summer.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is arguably the most talented player to emerge from Liverpool's academy in recent years, and played a key role in Jurgen Klopp's side winning the Champions League and Premier League.

However, in recent seasons questions have been increasingly asked about the 25-year-old's defensive ability.

While Klopp tends to deploy Alexander-Arnold in midfield, he has struggled to get into the England team partly due to his defensive shortcomings.

This season, for the first time this becoming a regular starters, the star has had to compete for his Liverpool place with another right-back.

20-year-old Conor Bradley seriously impressed when he replaced the injured Alexander-Arnold in Klopp's starting XI in January, so much so that he has limited his teammate's minutes since.

With Alexander-Arnold's contract set to expire in 2025 and the summer transfer window fast approaching, former Liverpool full-back Steve Nicol has suggested that the club could sell the star for as little as £60 million.

That sum wouldn't even make him the most expensive full-back ever; that title is held by Lucas Hernandez, who joined Bayern Munich from Atletico Madrid in a £68 million move in 2019.

"Trent Alexander-Arnold, as a full-back, is a poor defender," Nicols said on ESPN FC.

"There's no getting away from that. I don't care who you support, who you watch, Trent is not a good defender. But he's so good going forward.

"It wouldn't be a surprise if Real Madrid were to offer 60, 70 or 80 million... when you've got a young kid in Conor Bradley, who is a miles better defender and is great going forward [but] isn't in the same class as Trent.

"So it depends on the next manager, whether that particular thing could happen."
