Steven Gerrard named a surprise pick for one other Premier League team he’d want to see lift the title other than his beloved Liverpool.

Arsenal are cruising towards lifting their first Premier League crown since 2004 under Mikel Arteta with Liverpool failing to challenge at the top of the table following last season’s title win.

Gerrard has been out of work since leaving Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia and has been naturally linked by supporters with taking over at Anfield on an interim basis if under-pressure Arne Slot is relieved of his duties.

With Liverpool well and truly out of the title race, Gerrard has made a surprise admission by naming the one club he wouldn’t mind watching lift the title - Newcastle.

Gerrard walked through his greatest memories as a player and after seeing the away jerseys in the away dressing room during his tour of Anfield admitted the Magpies are his second team in the league.

“It's quite fitting, actually, that we're in the Newcastle dressing room because, outside of Liverpool, if I wanted anyone to win the league, it would be Newcastle,” he told TNT Sports.

"They’re my number two team in the Premier League. I’ve never, ever said that [before], but there you go. That’s live for you."

Slot is under increasing pressure on Merseyside after being booed off the pitch following their 1-1 draw with struggling Tottenham at Anfield.

The Dutchman will have just 12 months on his current deal during the summer and Gerrard has already made his feelings clear about taking the job even on a temporary basis.

“"I’ll be brutally, brutally honest with you. I’d help Liverpool in any department at any minute of every day, I’d help them with anything," he told Ally McCoist back in December.

"I don’t want Arne Slot to lose his job. I want him to fix this and turn it around and make Liverpool great.

"I was bouncing all over the city four or five months ago when Liverpool won the league.

“I’m a Liverpool fan. I want the best for Liverpool.

"But if Liverpool need me in any department at any time, I’ll be there for them."

Slot faces a crucial game against Galatasaray on Wednesday in the Champions League and would face a serious fight to keep his job if they fail to overturn the 1-0 deficit.
