Liverpool’s most prolific goalscorer, Ian Rush, has revealed what fellow Reds legend Mohamed Salah told him in the aftermath of his darkest moment.

Salah will close the curtain this weekend on an illustrious nine-year Anfield reign that has seen the forward win two Premier League titles and take Liverpool back to Champions League glory.

The Egyptian won four Golden Boots, two Playmaker Awards, and an unparalleled three PFA Players’ Player of the Year trophies during his time at Anfield.

The winger joined Liverpool in the summer of 2017, previously described as a ‘Chelsea reject’ before the Egyptian re-invented himself with Serie A side Roma.

His time with the Blues had ended in catastrophic failure, falling out of favour with manager Jose Mourinho and choosing to escape to Italy and distance himself from the criticism he endured in England.

Salah returned to the Premier League with a point to prove, hitting never-before-seen heights at Liverpool across the 2017/18 season.

The winger broke the English top-flight goalscoring record in a 38-game season, bagging 32 goals in the Premier League while scoring another 10 in Europe as he led his side to a Champions League final showdown against Real Madrid.

Salah’s horror Champions League injury changed everything, says Rush

Salah combined 44 strikes with 16 assists to put together one of football’s greatest ever individual campaigns in his debut season at Liverpool, but the season ended in tragedy.

In the Champions League final, the Egyptian was withdrawn shortly after the half-hour mark following a clash with Real Madrid centre-back Sergio Ramos.

Salah suffered a horrifying shoulder injury after an on-the-ball tussle to the ground with Ramos, causing his exit and a swift 3-1 Liverpool defeat at the hands of Real Madrid.

The Egyptian revealed in a documentary released today by Liverpool that he didn’t stay to watch the remainder of the game, opting instead to visit the hospital.

Rush, the Reds’ highest ever goalscorer, revealed what Salah told him in the aftermath of the event, and how it led Liverpool to immense glory under Jurgen Klopp.

The Reds legend said: “When he got injured by Sergio Ramos in the Champions League final in Kyiv, he said to me, ‘that’s never going to happen to me again.’”

“He adapted his training to get stronger — more yoga and core work. Twelve months later, at the next final in Madrid [against Tottenham Hotspur], I’d barely taken my seat when Mo put us in front,” he continued.

The Egyptian will be remembered not just for his legendary haul of goal involvements, but for his freak availability, seemingly never getting injured during his time at Anfield prior to his latest campaign.

Salah missed just eight games through physical injury between the years of 2017 and 2025 while commanding his many Liverpool front-lines to glory.

The Egyptian struggles to rewatch the injury he endured in 2017, revealing in Liverpool’s farewell documentary that he turns off the clip whenever it appears online.

At least the 33-year-old’s darkest moment in Liverpool red paved the way for future success at Anfield, as the event that changed everything for the Reds superstar.
