Liverpool began their pre-season campaign with a 4-2 win against German side Karlsruher.

Darwin Nunez gave Liverpool the lead after just three minutes to open his pre-season account.

But the German second division side hit back, with new signing Lars Stindl equalising on 39 minutes.

Liverpool made 11 changes in the second half, with Alexis Mac Allister making his first appearance in a Reds shirt.

And although the hosts took the lead on 49 minutes through Sebastian Jung, the Reds dominated possession in the opposition half and equalised through Cody Gakpo.

Their dominance allowed several young players to get on the ball in dangerous positions, with Ben Doak, Calum Scanlon and James McConnell all producing encouraging displays.

Diogo Jota scored the winning goal in added time, slotting beyond the goalkeeper to give Liverpool the victory, before netting another to add some gloss to the scoreline.

Here is how we rated the players in the second half:

Viteslaz Jaros - 6

Young goalkeeper could do little to keep out Karlsruher's second goal. A relatively quiet evening otherwise.

Joe Gomez - 7

Wasn't afraid to join attacks down the right flank as Liverpool dominated possession. His deep cross led to Gakpo's equaliser.

Joel Matip - 6

A solid display from the Liverpool veteran, who will hope for a less injury-hit season this term.

Jarrel Quansah - 6

Looked comfortable in possession and timed his challenges well in what was his first Reds appearance since a loan spell in League One last season.

Calum Scanlon - 7

The 18-year-old was consistently up and down the left flank, and looked to take on defenders. Will surely get more opportunities to impress Klopp in pre-season.

James McConnell - 7

An encouraging display from the 18-year-old playmaker, who used the ball nicely in the centre of midfield.

Alexis Mac Allister - 6

A tidy debut for one of Liverpool's two newest signings. Recycled the ball well in possession and looked a threat in the final third.

Kostas Tsimikas - 6

Adapted well to a role change, which saw him drift into midfield from his usual left-back spot. Showed off his passing range and looked to control play for the Reds. Out of position for the Karlsruher goal.

Ben Doak - 8

Showed some nice touches and wasn't afraid to run at the Karlsruher defence and get in behind every time he received the ball. The Scot will hope for more first team chances this season.

Diogo Jota - 9

Found space to cushion the ball down for Gakpo's leveller midway through the half. A solid display from the Liverpool frontman, who consistently looked to make forward runs. Scored the winning goal late on with a calm finish, before adding another almost immediately from kick-off.

Cody Gakpo - 8

Opened up his pre-season account with a well-taken goal on the turn to level the scores. Caused problems for the Karlsruher defence. Shifted back into midfield after Koumas' introduction.

Lewis Koumas - 6

Came on for Scanlon but had little time to make a significant impact on proceedings.

Below are the first half ratings:

Caoimhin Kelleher - 7

Started the game in the absence of Alisson. Looked good with the ball at his feet and made a good save midway through the half.

Connor Bradley - 5

Looked to make his way down the flank given the opportunity but gave away several fouls. He should have more opportunities to impress.

Ibrahima Konate - 5

Solid display overall but gave away the free kick which led to Karlsruher's equaliser through Stindl.

Virgil van Dijk - 6

Took the captain's armband and looked his usual assured self. Saw a goal disallowed from a corner.

Andrew Robertson - 5

A slightly slower start to pre-season for the Scottish defender, who gave the ball away on a couple of occasions.

Bobby Clark - 6

Good energy in midfield and made encouraging runs forward. A solid display by the youngster in the absence of more experienced names.

Trent Alexander-Arnold - 7

Played in a midfield role and was Liverpool's best player. His passing range was on full display and produced a vital defensive action when Karlsruher forayed forwards.

Dominik Szoboszlai - 5

A tidy debut for Liverpool's newest signing, although perhaps could have played riskier balls when given the opportunity.

Luis Diaz - 5

Good energy but did not have a significant impact on the first half.

Mohamed Salah - 6

Assisted Nunez for Liverpool's opening goal and linked up well with the Uruguayan. Had a shot saved later in the half.

Darwin Nunez - 6

Got the opening goal with a cool finish but could have taken his chance first time. Will be looking for a better performance in the Reds' next friendly.
