Liverpool handed new blow as player suffers injury on the eve of Real Madrid clash in Champions League

Liverpool have been hit with a fresh injury blow going into a huge run of fixtures.

Liverpool have been handed a fresh injury blow after a player pulled up with a problem ahead of the Champions League clash with Real Madrid.

The Premier League leaders host the 15-time European champions at Anfield on Wednesday night, before welcoming Manchester City in a huge fixture on Sunday.

But it's now been reported that the Reds will be without left-back Kostas Tsimikas. According to Paul Joyce from The Times, the Greece international rolled his ankle in training and is now out injured.

Joyce tweeted: "Kostas Tsimikas facing short spell on sidelines for Liverpool after injuring ankle in training."

Arne Slot will speak to the media at 15:30pm in a press conference to give an update on Tsimikas and any other injury concerns. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson Becker, Diogo Jota and Federico Chiesa have also been on the sidelines in recent times, though Harvey Elliott was back on the bench after recovering from a broken foot which put him out of action for three months.

Tsimikas missed the 3-2 comeback win over Southampton on Sunday with what was reported as a knock but it appears as though the problem is a tad more severe and he is set to be absent for a small period.

The 28-year-old has largely played back-up to Andy Robertson at left-back since he signed from Olympiakos for a fee of £11.75 million back in 2020.

He has played six times in the Premier League this season, two of which were starts. But with games coming thick and fast, Tsimikas will have likely received more game-time to ease the burden on Robertson.

Liverpool are top of the new Champions League table as well as the Premier League, with four wins from four so far under Slot. Their only defeat in all competitions this season was a shock 1-0 loss at home to Nottingham Forest in September.
