Jurgen Klopp has now overtaken Sir Alex Ferguson in the list of highest-spending Premier League managers of all time.

Liverpool boss Klopp has made two signings this summer to take him above Ferguson, with the Reds completing deals for Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai.

More incomings are expected, with Liverpool having recently seen a second bid rejected by Southampton for midfielder Romeo Lavia. As per Sky Sports reporter Melissa Reddy, they are also in talks with Fluminense over a deal for defensive midfielder Andre Trindade.

According to the Daily Mirror, Klopp has now moved ahead of Ferguson in the ranking of highest-spending Premier League managers.

The Scot spent £570.4 million during his near 27-year stint in charge of Manchester United, and topped the list by the time of his retirement in 2013.

But spending figures in the current era of football far outweigh those that were seen throughout much of Ferguson's tenure, and his trust in United academy graduates also meant his spending was lower than it could otherwise have been.

His infamous rival, Arsenal icon Arsene Wenger, overtook Ferguson by virtue of having an extra five years in charge of the Gunners after the Scot's retirement.

But even the Frenchman himself has fallen behind one current and one former Premier League manager, while a surprising name completes the top five.

Highest-spending Premier League managers revealed

Perhaps even more surprisingly, Ferguson doesn't occupy that top five - an indication of the scale of transfer spending now present in football.

Instead, former Liverpool and Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers splits the ex-United manager and current Reds boss Klopp, having spent £591.8 million in his career.

The top two spots are occupied by Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola - the only two managers to have a cumulative spend of over £1 billion in the history of the Premier League.

The top 10 list of highest-spending Premier League managers (via Daily Mirror) is as follows:

  • 1. Jose Mourinho (Chelsea/Manchester United/Tottenham) - £1.14 billion
  • 2. Pep Guardiola (Manchester City) - £1.05 billion
  • 3. Arsene Wenger (Arsenal) - £762.3 million
  • 4. Jurgen Klopp (Liverpool) - £613 million
  • 5. Brendan Rodgers (Swansea/Liverpool/Leicester) - £591.6 million
  • 6. Sir Alex Ferguson (Manchester United) - £570.4 million
  • 7. Manuel Pellegrini (Manchester City/West Ham) - £526.5 million
  • 8. Mark Hughes (5 clubs inc. Manchester City) - £513.5 million
  • 9. Antonio Conte (Chelsea/Tottenham) - £511.2 million
  • 10. Eddie Howe (Bournemouth/Newcastle) - £481.7 million
