Jurgen Klopp has explained the dig he made at Moises Caicedo ahead of Liverpool's Premier League clash with Chelsea.

On Wednesday Liverpool will take on Chelsea at Anfield looking to consolidate their place at the top of the Premier League table.

Jurgen Klopp's side are two points ahead of Arsenal, who have played one game more, and five ahead of Manchester City, who have a game in hand.

Liverpool are doing better than expected considering Klopp's squad underwent a significant overhaul last summer. The German coach - who last week announced he will leave the club at the end of the season - missed out on two of his main transfer targets, with both joining Chelsea instead.

Liverpool looked set to sign Moises Caicedo from Brighton for a British record fee of £115 million, but the Ecuadorian midfielder performed a U-turn and joined Chelsea instead.

After missing out on Romeo Lavia and Jude Bellingham - who joined Chelsea and Real Madrid respectively - Liverpool signed Japan international Wataru Endo from Stuttgart for just £15.4 million.

With Caicedo struggling for form at Stamford Bridge, Klopp has explained why he is happy that Liverpool missed out on the midfielder.

"We found Wataru, we already knew Macca [Alexis Mac Allister] could play the position and Dom [Dominik Szoboszlai] was always on my radar," Klopp explained on Tuesday.

"If one of the £100m [signings] had worked, there's no chance to do another. That's what I meant when I said we are so lucky. Everything in the 'if not scenario' worked out."

During a test event for the new Anfield Road End in December, Klopp told fans: "The summer we had, we had a few strange things happen in the transfer market but here, between us, I can say, 'My god, were we lucky, eh?

"We didn't know that in that moment and it didn't feel like it in that moment, but yeah, I'm really happy that it worked out, but you never know before.

"We were interested in Bellingham, realised it would not happen and we thought we could maybe do Caicedo so went in. [But] he had an emotional agreement already with Chelsea and Mauricio Pochettino. Then [Romeo] Lavia had his own reasons - so we were there. Then we found our top solution."
