Federico Chiesa transfer bombshell drops after Arne Slot makes claim about Liverpool star

The Italian helped Liverpool to a 4-2 victory against Bournemouth on Friday amid speculation surrounding his future at Anfield.

A huge update on the future of Federico Chiesa has emerged just hours after he helped Liverpool open their 2025/26 Premier League campaign with a win over Bournemouth.

Liverpool left it late to beat Bournemouth 4-2 at Anfield on Friday and secured all three points thanks to strikes from Chiesa and Mohamed Salah in the dying embers of proceedings.

Chiesa’s strike was his first in seven Premier League appearances since joining from Juventus last summer.

Throughout the 2024/25 title-winning campaign, he was forced to watch on from the bench and hardly featured aside from appearances in the Carabao and FA Cup.

And there’s no doubt that he’ll be hoping his strike against the Cherries is a turning point in his so-far disappointing spell on Merseyside.

The 27-year-old, who is contracted to Liverpool until 2028, has been linked with a move back to his native Italy this summer, with Napoli, AS Roma, AC Milan and Juve among the clubs touted as a possible destination.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot was asked about the player’s future following his side’s victory on Friday.

"As long as he's here, it's definitely at Liverpool, and I have no reason to believe something is going to change,” Slot explained.

“He had a hard time last season getting his fitness ready.”

He added: “After the fans sung for him so many times during the game and last season as well, I think it's nice for him to give them something in return, and that's definitely what he did today."

Then, on Saturday, a huge update on the player’s future was dropped by journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said: “Federico was never desperate to leave Liverpool; he had to leave Liverpool at some points.

“It was June/July, the player had a feeling there was no space for him… he was like, ‘If I don’t play, I have to [leave]’.”

Romano added: “At the moment, [he] is happy to stay at Liverpool… at the moment, Chiesa is very happy to stay at Liverpool.”

The journalist also made clear that this could change if an attractive offer from an Italian club arrives.

What has Federico Chiesa said about his future at Liverpool?

Despite the links with a move away from Anfield, Chiesa has not tried to force a move at any point and even admitted that he “wouldn’t mind staying in Liverpool” when speaking back in June.

The Italian opened up about his tough debut season during an interview with Corriere dello Sport.

Chiesa said: “There were plenty of difficulties in the first few months. If you think about it, I arrived in Liverpool on August 26th and found myself catapulted to another planet, with other teammates, without having trained with them, but with a coach, no friendlies, nothing... And, if you remember, in the autumn Liverpool were playing at three times the pace of the others, an incredible intensity."

When pressed about his future, he added: "The year is over. But it's an experience I'd do again. I'll soon sit down with the club... and my family to figure out the best solution. I wouldn't mind staying in Liverpool at all."
