Why Diogo Jota's funeral will take place so soon after Liverpool star's tragic death as details revealed

A funeral for the late Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva will take place two days after the tragic accident.

Diogo Jota's funeral will take place just two days after he and his brother Andre Silva died in a car accident, it has been confirmed.

The siblings were involved in a fatal crash in Zamora, northwestern Spain in the early hours of Thursday morning while on the way to Santander.

The car, a green Lamborghini, suffered a tyre blowout while overtaking on the A52 and became engulfed in flames, with both brothers pronounced dead at the scene according to Zamora Provincial Council.

Jota's sad passing comes just 10 days after he tied the knot with childhood sweetheart Rute Cardoso, who is the mother of his three young children.

Autopsies took place at a local forensic unit in Zamora and later on Thursday, hearses were seen arriving at a funeral home in Puebla de Sanabria.

But funeral proceedings will begin imminently for the pair, according to multiple reports.

Jose Manuel Macedo, a local priest, confirmed that a wake will take place at Sao Cosme Chapel, 30 minutes away from Jota's hometown of Porto.

That service will start at 3pm on Friday as per the Daily Mail, before a 10am funeral mass next door the following day at Igreja Matriz de Gondomar - a church not far from where Jota recently tied the knot.

Their bodies will then be laid to rest at the local cemetery, as per beIN Sports.

"The bodies of the brothers will arrive at the resurrection chapel for the wake which will take place tomorrow and then the funeral will be at 10am on Saturday," Macedo told CNN Portugal.

"We're available to celebrate [their life] with everyone and to share the pain and the Christian hope."

In Portugal, it is common for a funeral to take place as soon as 48 hours after a death - with a wake part of the traditions which include wearing black for mourning and a full Catholic service.

It is not known how public or private the funeral be, and whether Jota's teammates will be in attendance to say their goodbyes.

Tributes to Jota flooded in, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Jurgen Klopp, Arne Slot, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson among those left heartbroken by the tragic passing.

Liverpool have said they will "rightly immortalise" Jota's No.20 shirt after requests for it to be retired.

The 28-year-old scored 65 goals in all competitions for the Reds, winning two Carabao Cups, the FA Cup and the Premier League.
