“Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.

“We will continue to provide them with our full support.”

Former Liverpool captain Jamie Carragher also paid tribute.

One fan said: “Retire his number… nobody else should wear the number 20. Awful, awful news.”

Another added: “Retiring his No. 20 would be a beautiful tribute. Jota was one of the most dangerous players off the bench. “

A third suggested: “I’ll never forget you. Rest easy, number 20. You’ll never walk alone."

Liverpool have never retired a shirt number previously.
