Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone was sent off after getting involved with the crowd following Liverpool's late winner.

Reigning Premier League champions Liverpool kicked off their quest for Champions League glory on Wednesday by taking on Atletico Madrid at Anfield.

In the first half, the Reds were in a rampant mood as they went 2-0 up after just six minutes, thanks to Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah.

However, Marcos Llorente made it 2-1 just before half-time.

In the second period, Liverpool hit the post through Salah before Llorente stunned Anfield to make it 2-2 with 82 minutes on the clock.

Deep into stoppage time, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk headed in from a corner to make it 3-2.

Speaking about Van Dijk's goal, Ally McCoist said on TNT Sports: "Superb. Brilliant delivery. He has half a yard and that's all he needs. He gets away and it's brilliant. Brilliant header."

As the Liverpool players celebrated, the camera quickly panned to Atletico boss Diego Simeone, who was seen having words with the crowd.

After being dragged back by the stewards and his own staff, the Argentine was shown a red card by the referee.

Liverpool held on to record a vital opening night victory in the Champions League.

Speaking after the final whistle, Van Dijk said to TNT Sports: "We found a way again. We were dangerous from our set-pieces. They were pretty aggressive. I’m happy I got the winner."

McCoist added: "Let's be honest, after the opening minutes we were thinking how many [for Liverpool]. But they got back in it. Second half Llorente was tremendous. They get back to two each, he gets his goals.

"Then the drama at the end, red cards for coaches and then a wonderful header to win the game. I really enjoyed it."

Arne Slot's men will be back in Premier League action this weekend when they take on Everton at Anfield for the first Merseyside Derby of the 25/26 season.
