Newcastle and England star Kieran Trippier has named the best manager he has played under - and it isn't Gareth Southgate.

Trippier is set to play in his fourth international tournament with England at Euro 2024, and could even start the opening group game against Serbia at left-back amid the absence of Luke Shaw.

The 33-year-old has been a revelation at Newcastle since signing from Atletico Madrid in January 2022, and provided 10 assists in the Premier League last season.

His progress was disrupted by a calf injury between March and May that ruled him out of action, but Trippier made a successful comeback before the end of the season.

Ahead of Euro 2024 getting underway, the right-back took part in a quickfire Q&A session with Gary Neville on The Overlap.

The former Burnley and Tottenham star, who has picked up caps for his country, was asked to give the name of the best manager he has ever worked under.

Trippier had a host of names to choose from, with Roberto Mancini, Mauricio Pochettino and Diego Simeone just three of those to have managed him throughout his career.

The 33-year-old could have also opted for his current managers Eddie Howe - who he also spent time with briefly at Burnley before the arrival of Sean Dyche - or Southgate, but decided not to name either and went with Simeone instead.

He said: "I'd say Simeone. Sorry, Eddie!"

Speaking after he left Atletico to join Newcastle, Trippier opened up on Simeone's behaviours as a manager - and what he used to do before every match.

He told The High Performance Podcast: "The way you see him on the touchline, that's just how he is.

"Before every game, you'll see him storming up and down the corridor, just looking down at the floor for about 40 minutes.

"I don't know what he's thinking about. It's like he's had about five Red Bulls before a game, he just can't sit still.

"If you're not going to run for him, you don't play - simple as that. He's incredible as a man manager."

Kieran Trippier was speaking on The Overlap, brought to you by Sky Bet.
