Five players Jose Mourinho could sign to build perfect Fenerbahce XI including three ex-Man Utd stars

Five players Jose Mourinho could sign to build perfect Fenerbahce XI including three ex-Man Utd stars

Jose Mourinho could raid his former clubs in the summer transfer window

Jose Mourinho is set for a swift return to management after reportedly agreeing a move to Fenerbahce.

Mourinho has been out of work since being sacked by Roma back in January and has been constantly linked with the Saudi Pro League as well as various international jobs.

It appeared a shock return to the Premier League was on the cards after odds were slashed on a sensational move to Chelsea to replace Mauricio Pochettino but the London club are putting the finishing touches on appointing Leicester City manager Enzo Maresca.

Now, it appears Mourinho is destined for Turkey with Sky Sports’ Gianluca Di Marzio claiming an agreement has been reached with Fenerbahce over a two-year deal.

With Mourinho back in the dugout, we take a look at a few players he could look to sign to build his perfect starting XI.

David de Gea

Ex-Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is still without a club after leaving Old Trafford last summer. The 33-year-old was a regular starter in the Premier League before Andre Onana’s arrival but is still yet to sign a deal with a new side. He was spotted training at non-league side Altrincham last month and won the Golden Glove award in his final season at United. Dominik Livkovic is currently Fenerbahce's no.1 but De Gea was linked with a move to Roma during Mourinho’s time in charge suggesting he would be open to a move.

Raphael Varane

Another player entering free agency is World Cup winner Raphael Varane. The Frenchman waved an emotional goodbye to Manchester United at the end of the season and ended his stay on a high, putting in an excellent performance as Erik ten Hag’s side defeated Manchester City to lift the FA Cup in Varane’s final game. The defender is no stranger to Mourinho having worked with the Portuguese during his time at Real Madrid and confirmed his former manager tried to sign him during his spell in charge at Old Trafford.

Francesco D’Alessio

Mourinho could also return to Roma to raid his former club for a promising youngster who he handed a first-team debut to. Francesco D’Alessio made his senior debut for the club during a win against Servette in the Europa League as a 19-year-old but has found minutes hard to come by since Mourinho’s departure. ‘The Special One’ clearly saw potential in the Italian youngster and could offer him the chance for more first-team minutes in Turkey.

Diego Carlos

Mourinho has previously commented on the importance of having Brazilian talent in his squad and is set for an awkward reunion with ex-Manchester United midfielder Fred. Another Brazilian is set to be available this summer as Aston Villa look to cash in on defender Diego Carlos. The Telegraph report Villa are willing to sell the defender in order to comply with profit and sustainability rules in the Premier League. He made 27 appearances for Unai Emery’s side last season and would add a wealth of experience to Fenerbahce’s back line.

Romelu Lukaku

Finally, Mourinho could be set for one final reunion with one of his favourite players - Romelu Lukaku. The duo have worked with each other three times at Chelsea, Manchester United and Roma, one last dance in Turkey shouldn’t be ruled out. Chelsea are not prepared to sanction another loan deal for the Belgian striker who has a £38m release clause in his contract at Stamford Bridge. Fenerbahce striker Michy Batshuayi has been linked with a move to the Italian side as Lukaku’s replacement and Mourinho could offer his former colleague the escape route he desperately needs.
