What Jordan Henderson has told close friends about his Saudi Pro League nightmare speaks volumes

What Jordan Henderson has told close friends about his Saudi Pro League nightmare speaks volumes

Jordan Henderson has left Saudi Professional League side Al Ettifaq after just six months

What Jordan Henderson told his close friends about his time in Saudi Arabia speaks volumes.

After 12 years as a Liverpool player, Henderson decided to leave Anfield for the Middle East as he signed for Saudi Professional League club Al Ettifaq.

Henderson was one of many big-name players who ditched European football for Saudi Arabia during the summer transfer window.

The former Liverpool captain was joined by the likes of Demarai Gray and Gini Wijnaldum at Al Ettifaq, who are managed by Reds legend Steven Gerrard.

However, after just six months, Henderson declared his wish to return to Europe earlier in the month.

On Thursday afternoon, it was confirmed that Henderson has signed for Dutch Eredivisie giants Ajax.

Now, a recent report from The Athletic has revealed what Henderson told his close friends during his time living in Saudi Arabia.

The report claimed that despite declaring he had no regrets over the move from Liverpool, there was an overall sense that Henderson struggled to settle in Saudi Arabia.

It is believed that during the first international break, he told his friends that the standard of football was not up to scratch.

Henderson also reportedly talked about issues with the high temperatures and his family’s happiness.

At that stage, the expectation was that the 33-year-old would ride it out.

However, during November’s international break, it reportedly became clear that Henderson was fed up and was looking to leave.

During his Ajax press conference, Henderson spoke about the Saudi Professional League, he told reporters: “I think a lot of people would like me to sit here and criticise the Saudi league and everything that went along with that but that certainly wasn’t the case.

“It’s not something I’m going to do. I’ve got full respect for the league, for Al Ettifaq, the people over there, who really made me feel welcome.”

Henderson added: “Unfortunately these things sometimes don’t work out, in football and in life in general. I made a decision as soon as I knew this opportunity was there. The decision was this was the best move for me and my family at this time.

“If anyone was offended or feel as though I’ve upset them then that’s on me. I apologise for that, it was never my intention. I just want to look forward and concentrate on playing my best football with Ajax.”
