Footballer left covered in blood after being hit by a seat thrown by his own fans as disgraceful scenes unfold

Trouble flares in Scotland as Premiership season comes to a close

The league title race was a typically low-stakes in the Scottish Premiership this season but there was plenty left to play for as the championship group played out the last day of the campaign on Saturday.

Celtic won their 55th Scottish title and lifted the trophy at Celtic Park after rescuing an extremely late draw with a stoppage-time goal from James Forrest against St Mirren.

Forrest's first goal of the season means he's scored in 16 consecutive seasons and snatched two points away from the Buddies in the last knockings of the final game after the split.

The visitors were in a battle for a European place and led 1-0 at the home of the champions. With Aberdeen beating Dundee United at Tannadice, St Mirren were agonisingly close.

United turned it around against the Dons, winning 2-1 thanks to goals from Declan Gallagher and released Wrexham striker Sam Dalby to claim a Europa League qualifying spot.

Jim Goodwin's United joined Celtic, Rangers, Hibernian and Aberdeen in the European places but the celebrations in the City of Discovery turned ugly.

As delighted home supporters poured onto the pitch, visiting fans from Aberdeen reacted and a seat reportedly thrown from the away end struck and injured Dons defender Jack MacKenzie.

"A seat was thrown by the visiting fans in response but it only succeeded in catching Dons full back Jack MacKenzie on the head," reports The Sun.

"The Scotland fringe man subsequently required major treatment from medical staff on the Tannadice pitch in a shocking incident.

"It's believed he DIDN'T require hospital treatment but images show him blooded and bruised with a head wound requiring significant taping as he was carted off the field on a stretcher."

24-year-old MacKenzie is out of contract at the end of the season and could leave Pittodrie, with a move to Plymouth Argyle on the cards according to The Sun.

MacKenzie was an unused substitute against United but Aberdeen – who started the season on an astounding winning run in cup and league under Jimmy Thelin but have faded badly – have one game left to play.

The Dons face Celtic in the Scottish Cup final at Hampden Park next Saturday.
