As we hit the halfway stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026, Austin Trusty's first-half strike for the USA against Turkiye smashed a record that obliterates any installment of the global event since records began in 1930.
Despite initial fears that the harsh heat in North America might slow games down with tired legs and conserved energy, the 2026 World Cup has been as far from a snooze fest as you could imagine.
Already, we've been treated to goals galore as the world's biggest stars like Kylian Mbappe, Cristiano Ronaldo, Harry Kane, and Lionel Messi have all helped themselves to braces and hat-tricks.
The footballing legends have been helped along with a World Cup high of 12 own goals, with brilliance being matched by the bonkers, and there are still 50 games left as we enter the squeaky-bum portion of the tournament.

But, rather befittingly as one of the host nations, the USA's opening goal in their 2-3 loss against Turkiye saw the 2026 World Cup become the most fruitful tournament of all time, in terms of goals scored.
2026 World Cup smashes goals scored record halfway through the tournament
Austin Trusty fired home from an extremely tight angle to put the USA 1-0 up against an already-eliminated Turkey, as the host nation cemented itself as the group winners and set up a Round of 32 fixture against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Trusty's neat finish was the 173rd goal scored at this tournament, which broke the previous record of 172 set last time out in Qatar.
The expanded tournament has clearly played its role here, but with just 54 games on the clock, the record surpassed that set in 64 games in the 2022 World Cup
We shouldn't be quick to dismiss just how many goals we have seen fired in compared to history gone by, too.
So far, with 50 matches left, the 2026 World Cup has been such a goal fest that it currently ranks as the sixth-best instalment of the global tournament in terms of average goals per game.
In fact, it's the highest goal-per-game ratio since 1958, with the ball hitting the back of the net roughly 3.27 times every match.
The record for the highest ratio will likely never be touched, as the 1954 World Cup saw massive scorelines in the group stages, as the net rippled 140 times in 26 games (5.38 GPG) - that was helped massively by Group 2, where West Germany, Turkey, Hungary, and South Korea combined for 43 goals in eight games, with scorelines like 9-0, 8-3, and 7-2. The Quarter-Final between Austria and Switzerland still holds the record for most goals in a single World Cup game with a scoreline of 7-5 in favour of Austria.
Back in the modern day, four more goals in the USA vs Turkiye game, including a 98th-minute winner from Kaan Ayhan, have extended the record to 177 goals.
Should the 2026 World Cup persist at this rich goalscoring rate, we'd see an unprecedented 341 goals in a single tournament, nearly double anything that we've ever seen before.
