The 2026 World Cup is expected to be the last appearance at the competition for several of the sport’s biggest stars, including Luka Modric, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Lionel Messi, and now one footballer has announced his retirement from international duty.
Messi and Ronaldo will be aiming to end their international careers with glory at the 2026 World Cup for Argentina and Portugal, respectively, as the Inter Miami star will be 42 when the next tournament begins in four years, while the former Real Madrid star will be 45 years old.
The pair have defied the odds in their careers and by reaching this tournament in North America, so you can never say for certain they won’t make an appearance in four years until they confirm the news; however, one star has taken the decision to hang up his international boots.
Patrik Schick has taken the decision to retire from international duty for the Czechia, announcing this less than 24 hours after the elimination of the European nation from the competition.

The Czechs did not have a memorable tournament as they finished bottom of Group A with one point after their draw with South Africa, suffering defeat to both Mexico and South Korea in their other fixtures.
Schick, at just the age of 30, announced his time in the Czechia shirt was over in a post on social media and that he would not be adding to his 56 caps.
The Bayer Leverkusen striker said: “Today, my national team chapter is coming to an end.
“This decision is not impulsive and did not come about overnight. It is an idea that I have carried within me for a long time and that I have thought about for a long time.
“It was a journey full of emotions, joy, disappointment, victories, and difficult moments.
“I have always tried to give my best to the national team and represent our country as best as possible.”
Schick scored on 26 occasions for his nation, scoring a vital goal against the Republic of Ireland in the qualifiers for this tournament but failed to net for Czechia this summer in the World Cup.
His statement continued: “I leave proud of what I have achieved in the national team jersey.
“But at the same time with the feeling that Czech football has much, much more to it than it has shown in recent years.
“We need to face the truth and change a number of things that have not worked in the long-term.
“I am not saying this out of anger or disappointment. I am saying this because I care about Czech football.
“Thank you to all the fans, team-mates and people who have supported me all along. It has been an honour to wear the Czech jersey.”
This decision may seem strange to Czechia supporters, as at the age of 30 he could have been an important player in their campaign to qualify for the European Championships set to be held across Ireland, Wales, Scotland, and England in 2028.
Schick’s record in this competition is impressive, as he netted on six occasions in seven fixtures across the 2020 and 2024 Euros, finishing as joint top scorer in the former.
It would also be possible he could have a role for Czechia at the next World Cup in four years’ time too, as he would only be 34 in 2030, as the competition is held across South America, Europe, and North Africa.
