With England looking to bounce back from their second-game curse in the 2026 World Cup, a strangely familiar foe in Panama lies in wait. Ahead of the group decider on Saturday, SPORTbible is here to take you through the key features that will wrap up Group L.

England’s road to World Cup glory hit a road bump with the Ghana match, after starting life well with four goals against Croatia. A solid defensive display from the African nation nearly saw them grab a winning goal on the break, leaving the Three Lions with cheeks rosier than the St. George’s cross.

As part of Operation Ladisfaction with Ladbrokes, we spoke to almost 1,500 fans across the UK before the tournament, and thankfully, many may have missed that flaccid display, with 20% of England fans not planning to tune in until it's squeaky-bum time in the knockouts.

But the Panama game now turns into a knockout game of its own, as any blunders here and England could face a horrendous Round of 32 tie and face an early, embarrassing exit.

With much to play for and a string of upsets already from climate-adapted sides like Cabo Verde against Spain, Panama pose a threat to England that could really derail their World Cup aspirations.

But there’s a deep bag of tricks at Tuchel’s disposal, and he will require the big hitters again to get that feeling of Ladisfaction back among England fans.

The players to watch out for

Panama - Cecilio Waterman

Having conceded just two goals in the competition so far, the strength in Panama’s lineup is their sturdy defence, and that will have to serve as the catalyst for the Americas nation, should they stand any chance of stopping the Three Lions.

But, we saw Ghana create chances on the counter-attack, and should the same happen on Saturday, hopes of a Panama goal rest on the shoulders of striker Cecilio Waterman. The established 35-year-old forward might not be as mobile as he once was, but he will link up play and try to get around the edge of the box to add to his 15 national team goals.

Much like in the Ghana game, you can also expect Waterman to do a job on the England midfield, man-marking the deep-lying Elliot Anderson to stop him pulling the strings.

If Panama is to get anything out of the game, it will be down to their talisman to shut down the midfield and set off counter-attacks for the wide players.

England - Marcus Rashford

Given the result against Ghana leaving the door ajar to the African nation to pinch top spot off us with a win against Croatia, the Panama tie has quickly become a must-win for England, meaning we’ll likely see a strong line-up led by Harry Kane. The English talisman will want to get on the scoresheet too, with hopes of catching Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race.

But there will be a bit of rotation to give players the chance to impress, and that’s where we believe Marcus Rashford will be England’s key man.

It’s likely that both wide men will change in England’s third game as Rashford and Saka could come in on either side to get well-needed minutes under their belts, and they will be key to getting behind the Panama defence while Kane drops deeper.

Rashford specifically will be on high alert to earn his spot back from Anthony Gordon, with the left side of attack needing pace and power, and unfortunately for Panama’s right back, there will be a lot of 1v1 opportunities out wide for Rashford to exploit.

Expect the Manchester United man to not only impress Tuchel but also remind the world of his quality as he looks for a new club.

Where the tie will be won

While the wide areas will be key for England, the 2026 World Cup has highlighted one flaw in the attacking arsenal, and that comes from the two advanced midfielders.

With Anderson relieving Declan Rice of most of his defensive duties, it has opened up space for the box-to-box player to join the attack. So far, though, Rice hasn’t made much of an attacking impact and has often occupied the same space as Kane and Bellingham.

Rice could be rested after an injury scare in the Ghana game left him strapped up, but whether it's the Arsenal man or a replacement like Mainoo or Rogers, we will need the midfield ‘eight’ to start getting in behind the striker and support the wide men.

For Panama, that means their tight low-block will need to be fluid and structured, passing on runners from midfield to the defence, while occupying Kane when he wanders off.

It’s a system England have struggled against, especially with Panama’s defensive back five, and there’s no reason why they can’t frustrate Tuchel’s impatient side again like they have done to Ghana and Croatia, barring one tiny lapse in concentration in both games.

Who will come out on top?

In our LADnation Survey with Ladbrokes, a whopping 87% of fans have England going deep into the quarter-finals, and that road starts with a group win to set up a favourable round of 32 match.

While 13% of fans are giddy enough to predict that football is coming home, that draw against Ghana can’t be shaken out of our heads just yet, as we need to learn how to break down a low block. Thankfully, Panama should provide that exact chance, and Tuchel’s men will have been getting the playbook out in training.

While we can expect some rotation in the squad, England’s quality will shine through and a repeat of 2018 is on the cards with a comfortable 3-0 win, one goal for each of the Three Lions.

England come in as heavy favourites on Ladbrokes at 1/6, with even a draw being a huge price at 7/1. Prices rise well for England if you expect goals, though, with a handicap of two goals increasing your odds to 6/5.

The Group L decider between England and Panama kicks off on Saturday, June 27, at 10pm BST (4pm local time).
